จากการที่ “กลุ่มวาฬไทย” ได้เข้าร่วมศึกษาเรียนรู้และทำ Photo ID วาฬบรูด้า
กับคณะเจ้าหน้าที่กลุ่มสัตว์ทะเลหายาก ศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาทรัพยากรทางทะเล
และชายฝั่งอ่าวไทยตอนบนมาอย่างต่อเนื่องในระยะเวลาไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมานี้

นับเป็นเส้นทางการเรียนรู้ที่มีความสุขและภาคภูมิใจที่ทำให้เราได้มีโอกาสช่วย
สนับสนุนการเผยแพร่ข้อมูลข่าวสาร ตลอดจน “ตัวตน” ของวาฬที่พบเห็นได้สม่ำเสมอ
ในท้องทะเลอ่าวไทยตอนบน นับได้เกือบถึง 50 ตัวแล้วในล่าสุดนี้ และในจำนวน
เหล่านั้น นับเป็น คู่แม่-ลูก ได้อย่างน้อย 12 คู่ ดังที่ปรากฏโฉมในปฏิทินปีนี้ของเรา

เมื่อมานึกย้อนดูแล้วก็นับได้ว่าเป็นเรื่องน่าชื่นใจ ที่ภายในชั่วระยะเวลาเพียงไม่กี่ปี
เราเปลี่ยนคำถามที่คนไทยมักจะถามกันอย่างงงๆ ว่า “เมืองไทยมีวาฬด้วยหรือ”
มาเป็นการตื่นตัวรับรู้กันทั่วไปแล้วว่า “เมืองไทยก็มีวาฬ” ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นคือรู้ว่าเป็น
“วาฬบรูด้า” และได้เห็นสายสัมพันธ์บางๆ ที่เริ่มถักทอเหนียวแน่นขึ้นระหว่าง
คนไทยกับวาฬเหล่านั้น

ความหมายของจำนวนวาฬ โดยเฉพาะการปรากฏตัวของแม่ลูกคู่ใหม่ๆ ที่มีอย่าง
ต่อเนื่อง แสดงถึงความเหมาะสม ความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของอ่าวไทย เราจึงอยาก
บันทึกปรากฏการณ์ครั้งนี้ไว้เพื่อเป็นหมุดหมายสำคัญของการศึกษาวิจัยวาฬ
ในไทย และเหนืออื่นใดคือเราอยากให้คนไทยร่วมกันภูมิใจ สนใจ และรักษาสิ่งนี้ด้วยกัน


ThaiWhales group has, for the past few years, joined the officials
of MCRC-UPPER to study about and make Photo ID for Brydes whales
in the Gulf of Thailand. We have also supported and publicized the news
and information of their regular present in the upper part of the Gulf
of Thailand.

Up until now, about 50 Brydes whales have been recorded. Among
them are 12 pairs of mother and calf whales which we proudly present
to you in this year calendar.

Looking back to the task we have done, we feel very proud and happy
to see the change we have made; from wondering,"Is there really a whale
in the gulf?" to realizing that there are whales in Thailand.
Moreover, Thai people know for sure that they are the Bryde’s Whales.

Furthermore, the relationship between people and whales has already
been created. The increasing number of whales, especially the continuous
present of new mothers and calves indicates the fertilities of their food
in the gulf. Therefore, we would like to record this for further research.
We would like all Thai to join the pride and would like to arouse their
interest in conservation.
